Michigan Court Blocks Suspended Former Judge’s Election Bid

A former Detroit judge suspended from the bench for six years—who nevertheless filed to run again in 2024—may not do so, the Michigan Court of Claims ruled while criticizing the secretary of state for allowing the candidacy to move forward.

The Michigan Supreme Court was clear when it suspended ex-36th District Court Judge Kahlilia Davis last year that she may not serve as a judge until 2029, even if she’s elected or appointed, Court of Claims Judge Christopher P. Yates wrote in a Monday ruling ordering Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson (D) to invalidate Davis’s candidacy.
